IELTS

IELTS is an English language examination that can be taken by foreign candidate who is interested to study or work globally where English is the primary language of communication. The Australia, UK, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, and are the most common countries where IELTS is recognised for university applications. The exam primarily assesses the test taker's ability to communicate in the four core English language abilities of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. IDP Education Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment jointly own and administer the IELTS test.

IELTS test & its modules

A candidate can choose between the General Training or Academic versions of the test. All applicants do the same Listening and Speaking sections. The Academic version of IELTS is difficult than the general version. The IELTS Academic test is suitable for those applicants who are interested to study in an English-speaking environment or university (for higher education). You can also take IELTS Academic for professional registration purposes.

The test has four sections:

  • 1. Listening - 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes
  • 2. Speaking - interview, 11-14 minutes
  • 3. Reading - different for Academic or General Training - 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes
  • 4. Writing - different for Academic or General Training - 2 pieces of writing, 60 minutes

Level and scores

A candidate can get a score between 1 and 9. Half scores can be possible also. Minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or 7.0. generally required for educational institutions. They may also demand a minimum score of 6.0 in each of the 4 sections.
